ESA will begin operating and maintaining three 500kW photovoltaic solar systems in North Carolina.

Lake Mary, Fl., April 18, 2013 – ESA Renewables (ESA), an industry leader in providing turnkey solar solutions, will carry out comprehensive operations and maintenance (O&M) plans on three 500kW rooftop arrays in North Carolina, specifically in Wake, Henderson, and Johnson Counties. Services that will be provided include preventative and corrective maintenance, task assignments, report generation, budgeting, stock inventory, thermal imaging and document management for an initial period of five years.

“Utilizing our highly experienced solar energy engineering staff, ESA has the ability to track all of the indicators and parameters to optimize performance and to carry out the required maintenance of each solar site,” said Javier Latre Gorbe, Vice-President of Technical Operations for ESA Renewables.

The O&M teams are strategically placed near each location to more effectively service and maintain the site according to best practice industry standards. The solar technicians will routinely perform preventative and corrective maintenance tasks. The preventative maintenance focus is on predicting failures, maintaining equipment, and ensuring tasks are performed according to a schedule to effectively manage time and capital. The corrective maintenance focus is on responding to incoming alerts to evaluate and, if needed, restore the site to optimal working condition, maximizing financial and energy returns.

“Due to ESA’s diligence and attention to detail in every facet of energy production, many installations are currently producing 20% more than projected by third party reports,” said Tammy Rhode, Manager of the Operations and Maintenance Department for ESA Renewables. “ESA manages the operation and maintenance platform effectively and efficiently manages the technician’s time which reduces the overall costs of O&M.”

ESA performs preventative maintenance services on the sites at least twice a year, to ensure that the sites are in optimal working order. In addition to the scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) service, ESA will also perform sample size tests to verify that nothing is overlooked– such as bolts, wiring and places where a normal performance alert may not be raised.

The Orlando Sentinel’s Kevin Spear talks with FOX35 about the OUC plan to offer customers the chance to buy power from “solar gardens.”

Much as neighbors might grow carrots and tomatoes in a single, community plot, Orlando’s municipal utility wants to plant a garden where its customers can harvest individual shares of solar power.

Already popular in other states, such “solar gardens” involve adding hundreds of photovoltaic panels to an area such as a parking lot, rather than erecting thousands of panels on a solar “farm” covering hundreds of acres.

Orlando Utilities Commission, in pursuing what apparently would be only the second project of its kind in Florida, plans to offer customers the chance to buy power from a solar garden in southwest Orlando at a fixed price for as long as 25 years.

For some customers, the added expense of OUC’s Community Solar Program may be worth it if they are concerned about coal mining that destroys Appalachian mountaintops, natural-gas drilling that poisons aquifers, and fossil-fuel burning that pumps heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

But just as important: That 13 cents per kilowatt-hour could become a bargain if, as some utility experts say is inevitable, prices shoot up for natural gas, which Florida’s utilities depend on heavily to produce electricity. Higher natural-gas prices would put pressure on OUC to raise its standard power rates.

Another selling point of a solar garden: “It works for people who want to have solar panels but can’t because trees shade their homes,” said Bob Reedy, solar-research director at the Florida Solar Energy Center in Cocoa. Apartment tenants and condominium owners — who account for more than half of OUC’s 185,000 electric customers — can’t install solar panels and also may be drawn to such a program.

Unless it’s canceled for lack of participation, the Community Solar Program will allow OUC customers to sign up for “units” of electricity from the solar garden.

Each unit will consist of 1,000 watts — the output of about four solar panels — that will flow into OUC’s power lines. The 1,000-watt output of those four panels will produce an estimated average of 112 kilowatt-hours a month. At 13 cents per kilowatt-hour, one unit of solar-garden power will cost $14.56 a month — or about $1 to $3 a month more than an equivalent amount of electricity from OUC’s coal, natural-gas and nuclear plants.

The program will allow customers to sign up for as many 15 units; an average residential customer uses about 10 units worth of power. A $50 deposit required at enrollment will be refunded after two years, and a solar subscription will follow customers if they move within OUC territory. Also, customers will be credited for any solar power they don’t use each month from their subscription.

OUC President Dan Kirby was the first customer to sign up for the program. He pledged to buy seven units’ worth of power, to show his support for the effort and because he has long wanted solar but did not want to spend thousands of dollars upfront to install a system on his roof.

Solar gardens are gaining momentum in California, Washington state, Colorado, Utah and Massachusetts, said Seth Masia, spokesman for the American Solar Energy Society, a nonprofit advocacy group based in Colorado.

The system generally thought of as the nation’s first, depending on your definition of a solar garden, belongs to the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. That Northern California utility’s program, started in 2008, was fully subscribed within six months by 672 customers.

Florida’s first such system is widely considered to be one established several years ago by Florida Keys Electric Cooperative. Scott Newberry, that utility’s chief executive officer, said customer participation was disappointing because solar power at the time was much more expensive than it is now.

OUC’s solar garden will consist of 1,632 solar panels — each about 3 feet by 5 feet and able to pump out 245 watts — attached to canopies built above 208 parking spaces at the utility’s Gardenia Avenue complex near John Young Parkway and Interstate 4.

The array’s total capacity will be slightly less than half a megawatt, or enough to completely supply about 40 homes. The array will be owned, financed, built and maintained by ESA Renewables LLC, a Lake Mary company and a subsidiary of Energía Solar Aplicada of Spain. Municipally owned utilities such as OUC usually pursue solar projects through private companies because nongovernment operators have access to federal grants or tax credits.

ESA Renewables will spend $1.2 million building and starting up OUC’s solar garden and will seek a grant to cover about 30 percent of that cost, said Lindsay Herold, the company’s contract administrator.

Working through a power-purchase agreement, OUC will pay ESA Renewables about 18 cents for each kilowatt-hour of electricity produced by the solar garden — so the utility will be subsidizing its customers’ subscriptions to the tune of 5 cents a kilowatt-hour.

Trudell, the utility’s spokesman, said the project is small enough that the subsidy won’t affect rates for customers who don’t participate. He also said OUC plans to expand the program if it proves popular.

Lake Mary, FL -March 7, 2013–ESA Renewables, an industry leader in providing turnkey solar solutions, announced the commissioning of the City of Orlando Fleet Maintenance Building Solar Project. ESA developed and constructed the 417.6 kilowatt (kW) roof-mounted photovoltaic solar array on the Fleet Maintenance Building located on South Westmoreland Drive in Orlando.

This project supports Orlando’s commitment to sustainability, facilitates green business opportunities, and promotes green and efficient policies within City departments. The installation of this solar array allowed ESA Renewables, a local business, to work hand-in-hand with Orlando’s City government and the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) to help preserve Orlando’s natural resources and promote an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

The City of Orlando Fleet Building installation is one of several solar projects ESA Renewables will be constructing in conjunction with OUC. ESA Renewables also has signed a contract to maintain and operate the system for 25 years.

“The collaboration between the City of Orlando, OUC and ESA Renewables presents a promising opportunity for Orlando,” said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables. “Not only does this project contribute to the sustainability of our economy through job creation, it also has a positive impact on the environment and our communities. We are excited to be involved with this project for many years to come through our Operation and Maintenance (O&M) services.”

“Solar installations like this one – and the community solar farm we will be working on with ESA later this year – add to OUC’s growing use of renewable energy while allowing us to stud yand optimize the impact large-scale solar arrays have on our electric system,” said Byron Knibbs, OUC Vice President of Customer & Sustainable Services.

The City of Orlando Fleet Maintenance Building solar project is fully operational and will generate approximately 590,000kWh annually, equivalent to powering about 54 average sized Orlando homes and offsetting 2,375 vehicles gas emissions per year. The construction of the rooftop solar array brought 20 green jobs to the City and will provide $800,000 in Energy cost savings over the life of the project.

“Through our sustainability initiative, Green Works Orlando, we are working to ensure our City remains one of the most environmentally-conscious communities in the country,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “A key part of our plan is investing in the next generation of clean, green energy, like solar, which will not only help us continue to prevent pollution, but also create new high-tech, high-wage jobs for our residents and further diversify our local economy.”

The system consists of 1,392 photovoltaic solar modules and is divided into three separate arrays with a total area utilization of about 50,000 square feet. All the power generated from the solar array will be sold to OUC under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

As Seen In: Business World Magazine

According to the declaration of Heraclitus, “The sun is new each day.” The modern era has seen a proliferation of new practices intent to harness solar potential and provide sustainable solutions that will renew capabilities in terms of energy efficiency and affordability. In that industry, ESA Renewables has emerged as an international leader.

ESA Renewables, LLC (ESA) is a leading alternative energy provider focused on delivering turnkey commercial and industrial photovoltaic projects to customers worldwide. ESA’s commitment to achieving maximum performance assures owners that they are getting the best return on investment from their solar power plants.

ESA Renewables was established in 2002. It started as ESA, and in 2010 it expanded to the US and became ESA Renewables after President Jeffrey Burkett and his partner bought into the company. Over the years, it has gradually expanded internationally. “It was a conglomeration of experience, knowledge and know-how from Spain that was implemented into the U.S., and then it was implemented by us into developing projects in the U.S. market,” Burkett explains.

Burkett has an extensive background in the management of construction and construction materials fabrication companies. During his 20-plus-year career, Burkett has sold, developed and financed a variety of construction-related projects. At ESA Renewables, he is responsible for all aspects of the company’s operations and performance, including project sales, the company’s future development, and their continuing operations.

Today, ESA’s shareholders include a large bank as well as various independent investors. That kind of strong financial backing gives ESA the capability to finance installations internally.

“We work with investors that want results and a guarantee and return on their investment they’re looking for,” Burkett says. “We work with financial institutes, take their investment and produce a targeted ROI for them. We’ve given them the assurance and responsibility that the projects are done in accordance with all of the highest standards available.”

“Everyone respects the ESA brand more because of what we’ve done and who we’ve partnered with.”

Reputation is key

ESA Renewables’ range of work includes project development, financing, design and engineering construction, commissioning, monitoring, operation and maintenance through the life cycle of each install. They’ve been trusted to take on such a wide-range of tasks and projects because they have proven how well they can perform on all of them. Not all companies in the alternative energy market have earned that faith. ESA owns a portfolio of PV investments, so we have a good understanding of the investment criteria that investors are looking for.

“We separate ourselves from everybody through our reputation for quality,” Burkett says. “In anything you do, your reputation is key.”

The company’s solid reputation is something they’ve earned time and time again with each project, which are thoroughly planned and “overproduced,” Burkett says. “Our projects overproduce energy, which helps bring repeat business with investors because of the reassurance we provide them. They don’t have to worry about if their system is operating at full capacity or just barely meeting the minimum requirements.”

“Most of our solar projects that we have built, overproduce approximately 13 to 23 percent of what is expected from the investors,” he adds.

ESA Renewables’ complete package of services has resulted in more than 500 installations worldwide involving 45 different utility companies. From viability studies and project development to engineering, construction, monitoring, commissioning and obtaining the necessary administrative permits – ESA does do it all.

What also makes ESA a leading alternative energy company is their solar integration with multi-megawatts installed in more than 500 solar PV power-generating facilities in the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, Chile, and Italy. These solar projects range from large-scale solar farms to commercial rooftop installs.

Internally, they employ a young, energetic team of professionals with a strong sense of teamwork, and a clear commitment towards sustainable energy, not unlike their clients. The young staff gives them the opportunity to look at today’s generation, Burkett says, adding that the younger generation has more insight on alternatives to doing things, which is symbolic as alternative energy is the “way of the future.”

“We are committed to each customer by delivering quality installations and making ‘going solar’ an effortless experience. We build customer loyalty by doing what we say we will every time and on time. We believe the satisfaction of our customers is the best measure of our success,” he says.

ESA has multiple preferred suppliers for panels, combiner boxes, inverters, and racking systems for their installations. These strong and long-lasting relationships allow the company to install PV systems that they know will perform to the highest standards at maximum output, Burkett says.

“We provide technologically advanced systems that provide value, cost-effectively reduce energy consumption, are reliable, sustainable and meet clients’ expectations.”

Green costs, green saves

As successful as ESA Renewables has been since the beginning, a constant challenge has been to convert people to green energy despite the cost involved. Burkett says it takes a lot of capital to build green projects, and the majority of them are a long-term financial investment. “While there are always people out there that want to do the right thing and have green power, are they willing to pay it in premium for that? Some are, some aren’t.”

That will be a challenge for a long time to come, Burkett admits, but the future is still going to be bright and will create more opportunities for green technologies. As more and more people embrace the idea of sustainability, the long-term future of ESA Renewables keeps getting better. “It is a cash-strong business that not only offers people a financial gain, but also a satisfying feeling that they are doing something good,” he says.

February 07, 2013 Clayton, NC. – PCX Corporation LLC, the leading manufacturer of offsite fabricated and modular electrical power systems for the commercial construction and data center industry, recently announced the commissioning of a rooftop solar array at its 70,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Clayton, North Carolina.

PCX is very proud to host one of the first large roof mounted solar arrays energized in the Johnston County area. It demonstrates our commitment to the environment and our participation in the Green Energy movement with all of our customers.” said Gary Pollock, VP and General Manager of PCX Corporation.

The solar farm is expected to generate approximately 650,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of power annually, which would be enough electricity to power approximately 46 average sized homes. The installation is comprised of 2,030 solar panels supplied by Yingli Green Energy and is assembled on approximately 54 thousand square feet of unused roof space on PCX Corporation’s manufacturing facility. The system will offset 670 tons of CO2 emissions equivalent to 78 passenger vehicles and keep 1,100 barrels of oil from being used each year. All of the power generated from the system will be sold back to the utility under a 20 year power purchase agreement.

“It has been a pleasure to work with PCX Corporation, MP2 Capital, and ESA Renewables to bring solar-powered manufacturing to Johnston County, North Carolina,” commented Robert Petrina, Managing Director of Yingli Americas. “As a global leader in its industry, PCX Corporation is setting an influential example as one of the first solar adopters both in its local community and globally.”

MP2 Capital, a leading investor in the renewable energy industry, provided the financing for the project. ESA Renewables, a turnkey solar solution provider, was responsible for overseeing construction and will be maintaining the system and providing operation and maintenance services (O&M).

“More and more companies are recognizing the need to move towards greener energy solutions to offset this country’s independence on foreign oil,” said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables.

Orlando, FL – January 24, 2013 – Yesterday, Orlando Mayor Dyer worked along with OUC Vice President of Customer and Sustainable Services Byron Knibbs and ESA Renewables to install solar panels on the roof of the City’s Fleet Management Division Building. The solar project is part of Green Works Orlando, the City’s sustainability initiative to engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”

“Through Green Works Orlando, the City is working to ensure Orlando remains one of the most environmentally-conscious cities in our country,”said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “A key part of our plan is investing in the next generation of clean, green energy, like solar, which will not only help us continue to prevent pollution, but also create new high-tech, high-wage jobs for our community and further diversify our economy.”

Mayor Dyer installs solar panel.
At the event, Mayor Dyer and Knibbs joined the ESA Renewables construction team to help mount the three-foot by six-foot solar panels to the roof of the City facility. When complete in February, a total of 1,392 solar panels will be installed in the three array system, which covers about 50,000 square feet.

View the work-along video.

“OUC is proud to help power Orlando’s designation as a Solar America City through projects like this,” Knibbs said. “In fact, later this year we will begin work on Central Florida’s first community solar farm at our Gardenia facility. The community solar farm will allow customers to purchase solar power without the expense and hassle of installing it at their home or business.”

The 417 kilowatt solar array is estimated to save the City $800,000 in energy costs over its 25-year life. In total, the project will generate enough energy to power about 43 average Orlando homes and offset emissions equivalent to planting 2,400 trees and taking 2,375 vehicles off the road per year.

“We are proud to be a part of the City’s efforts to move towards sustainable energy,” said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables. “Not only does this project contribute to the health of our environment, it also has a positive effect on our economy through the creation of 20 green jobs.”

The year 2012 proved to be an exciting one for ESA Renewables with many significant benchmarks including placing 25th on Solar Power World’s 2012 Top 100 Solar Contractors.

As we ring in the New Year, one thing is for certain, 2013 will prove to be an exciting year for ESA Renewables. New solar projects are on the horizon and ones under construction now will soon be commissioned. The solar industry in itself is expanding and growing with new demand. There’s no denying, future of solar keeps getting brighter!

Looking back on 2012, a few specific events come to mind that put in focus ESA’s achievements and growth for the year. Let’s recap them now:

1. The first event was receiving the Intersolar AWARD. In July of 2012, ESA Renewables was presented the Intersolar AWARD for Solar Projects in recognition of its Martins Creek Elementary School Solar PV project which demonstrated strong innovation. The Intersolar Award recognizes projects, both large and small, which utilize advanced technology, incorporate aesthetic and architectural concepts and exemplify outstanding services and products. ESA Renewables’ Martins Creek Elementary School installation in Murphy, North Carolina is one of the largest solar farms on school grounds in the US at 1MW. The system, which covers 5 acres, produces 20% more energy than initially projected: 1.3 million kWh of electricity. Some funds generated by the project equate to keeping approximately two school teachers employed annually.

2. ESA is expanding across the globe! In August of 2012, ESA announced its expansion to Central and South America. As part of the great strides ESA is achieving in these regions, the company opened a new development office in Chile.

3. Focusing on high quality workmanship, perfection of installation methods and quick commissioning, ESA was able to construct a 500kW rooftop solar installation in just three weeks from start to finish. The rooftop solar installation located in the Asheville, North Carolina area is expected to generate the annual amount of electricity as consumed by 45 houses in the area.

4. ESA’s fourth notable achievement happened just as the year was coming to a close. Solar Power World released a list of the Top 100 Solar Contractors of 2012. ESA Renewables was awarded the number twenty-five slot on the list having installed multi-megawatts of power in 2012. Having been founded in 2009, ESA Renewables is clearly a growing, stable and indeed an exciting place to work!

Selma to Welcome Solar Power from ESA Renewables
The Selma Town Council has cleared the way for construction of the town’s first solar farm. The council voted unanimously last week to add solar farms to the list of allowed uses in two zoning categories – industrial and residential-agricultural.

“Solar could take over during peak hours,” Douglass said. “When the regular power sources shut off, that’s when the solar energy could kick in,”

Solar farms could kick start economic growth in Selma, although town leaders are unsure how much of an impact the farms would have. “We’re obviously welcoming of green technology, and we want to be accommodating,” said Selma planning director, Ryan Simons.

As seen in the Smithfield Herald:

Solar-power company eyeing other Johnston sites

ESA Renewables, which plans to build a seven-acre solar farm in Selma, is exploring the possibility of solar farm elsewhere in Johnston County.

The company is closing in on a deal with Selma leaders that would allow it to build a seven-acre solar farm on Ricks Road between U.S. 70 and U.S. 301.

The proposed 8-megawatt farm would generate enough electricity power hundreds of homes, said ESA spokesman Craig Livingston. The company would connect to the town’s electricity grid and distribute the power through Progress Energy. The project would create 80 jobs, Livingston said.

ESA highlighted its comprehensive solar capabilities, from EPC to O&M and monitoring, at this year’s Solar Power International tradeshow

Lake Mary, FL., September 21, 2012 – ESA Renewables, an industry leader in providing turnkey solar solutions, attended and exhibited at the 2012 Solar Power International tradeshow in Orlando, Florida this past week. SPI is recognized as North America’s premier and most comprehensive event for solar industry professionals. Companies represented at the show ranged from equipment manufacturers and site developers to EPC and O&M providers. SPI provided an opportunity for industry experts to network and discuss potential business ventures and the future of solar energy.

ESA showcased its proprietary monitoring system and brought attention to its comprehensive O&M and EPC solutions. The monitoring system allows for centralized monitoring, reliable and secure data storage, adaptability to any size installation, and immediate access to alerts, updates, and current conditions on the site. Visitors to the ESA booth were given live demonstrations of the monitoring system via the web-based interface. Data viewing from solar plants currently online and utilizing the system was also available.

In addition to participating in the trade show and conference, ESA hosted a private party to show appreciation for its valued customers and trusted partners. The event turn-out was greater than predicted and presented ESA and other attending companies the opportunity to network with potential investors, customers, suppliers and other industry experts.

“Our private event was a huge success,” said Jeffrey Burkett, President of ESA Renewables. “It created an additional forum outside of the tradeshow for industry professionals to interact and strategic business relationships to be formed. With only three exhibition days, it was vital for ESA to continue industry conversations outside of the convention center halls.”

During the show, ESA discussed their growing development pipeline of projects located in the United States, Caribbean, and Central and South America that are slated for construction at the end of 2012 and early 2013. ESA would like to further discuss development opportunities as well as its project financing, EPC services, and comprehensive O&M solutions. Please contact us if you would like further information about any of our capabilities.
