New Bern Houses Largest Solar Panel Project in Eastern NC
As Seen on: News 14 Carolina
NEW BERN — New Bern is now home to the largest solar panel project in eastern North Carolina.
ESA Renewables built and monitors the project which uses the sun’s energy to generate electricity. The electricity is being purchased by Progress Energy. The panels will generate about 1.5 million KW hours per year.
That is enough energy to service about 100 average sized-households. Officials say the solar panels are a good source of renewable energy.
“The sun is a free source of energy as oppose to fossil fuels which are subject to fluctuating prices depending on the international commodities markets,” said Kirk Kieffer with ESA Renewables.
The solar panels will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,000 tons annually. That amount is equal to the greenhouse gas emissions from about 200 vehicles each year.
